Kharghar is the biggest educational hub of Navi Mumbai with institutes like National Institute of Fashion Technology, Institute for Technology and Management, G D Pol Yerala Medical College, Bhartiya Vidyapeeth and Annasaheb Chudaman Patil College of Engineering, Satyagrah College etc.
Social worker Vishal Malhotra of SAYA says, “Thousands of students residing in Kharghar usually travel by trains to reach their coaching classes. However the only means to travel to and fro railway station is either public transport bus or auto rickshaw. Bus services are at the interval of 30 minutes and queues are so long that if they can’t get to enter in the first bus, they hire an auto rickshaw”.
Vishal added explains, “This is where the problem begins. The auto drivers never stand in queue and similarly the commuters too never do the same. Hence all hell breaks loose when everyone competes to hire an auto. Youths mostly manage to edge out others while women and senior citizens are left behind”.
Tilakraj Malhotra, senior citizen and resident of Sector 21 says, “The only solution to this problem is queue system for both autos and commuters. Traffic Police and RTO must intervene and take action at the earliest”.
