With population rise in Nerul node, a reservation counter for long journey trains is need of the hour. Residents feel the demand is justified, as Nerul is the biggest residential node in entire Navi Mumbai.
Abhijit Thorat, a resident of Nerul and president of Navi Mumbai Railway Pravashi Welfare Association (NMRPWA) said, “Many people come to Nerul in search of livelihood. As per a census study, the population of Nerul node in the year 2001 was near 75,000. This has almost doubled in the last 10 years.”
Thorat added, “For years, residents of this node have to either go to CBD Belapur or Vashi to book tickets. The problem is that CBD Belapur reservation service is not only used by CBD Belapur residents but also by residents of Nerul, Kharghar and construction workers of newly developing node Ulwe too. The one at Vashi is used by residents of Ghansoli, Mhape, Koper Khairne, Vashi, Turbhe and Sanpada.”
A resident of Sector 48 Nerul and secretary NMRPWA, P Nayar, said the condition is really unbearable and the residents have to stand for hours just to get a ticket. “So people have to pay more to travel agents. And many a time, they even drop plans to visit their native homes.”
Baba Nyaynit, also a resident of Nerul, and member of NMRPWA said the only way out is to open new reservation counters in Nerul, the biggest residential node. “This will reduce the pressure on Vashi as well as CBD Belapur railway reservation counters.”
Thorat said, “We have organised a signature campaign and have made a target of 5,000 residents demanding a reservation counter in Nerul railway station.”
